When it comes to treating childhood obesity, prevention is the key. We can always measure to get things on the right track. We can limit or restrict sugar-sweetened beverages and provide plenty of fruits and vegetables in feeding the children. Eat meals as a family as often as possible.

Limit fast food meals and ask your child to participate in making healthier choices. Involve them in preparation of food. Make it fun. Be sure they get enough sleep and limit TV or other screen time and encourage children to play outside, keeping in mind to practice social distancing, wearing masks, and of course, thorough hand washing before and after they play.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children older than two and adolescents whose weight falls in the overweight category be put on a weight maintenance program to slow the progress of weight gain and eventually prevent obesity. Always consult with the primary care provider for best recommendations, management or treatment.
