Pain remains highly prevalent and it is a public health concern. It affects approximately one in five adults. Acute pain becomes chronic when the duration goes beyond expected healing time, usually about three to six months. When pain is uncontrolled, approximately one in ten suffering from pain develop increased disability, resulting to greater challenges in management and recovery. Globally, chronic pain is the leading cause of disability and disease burden. In the United States, direct and indirect costs related to chronic pain equals about $560 to $635 billion annually. These amounts are greater than the combined costs for heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Therefore, it's very important that if you have pain, ensure to see your health care provider for appropriate evaluation and management.
