There are various approaches used to manage chronic pain. Unfortunately, recent systematic reviews and made analysis of randomized controlled trials have shown that many medications, especially opioids, only show small, short-term improvement in pain relief and function. The intermediate and long-term evidence for opioid use is limited and has not been shown to be superior to non-opioids. On the other hand, non-pharmacologic modalities for chronic pain have shown some improvement in pain and function. This includes multidisciplinary rehabilitation, exercise, cognitive behavior therapy, and complementary approaches such as yoga, tai chi, and acupuncture. With the recent opioid crisis, where almost 70% of drug overdose deaths in the United States involved an opioid, and approximately 128 people die daily from prescribed and illicit opioid use, it is very important to be open to other pain management methods that might be more successful in managing pain while minimizing the risks
